Town of Brunswick Receives $5,000 Greenway Grant for Development of Comprehensive Vision Plan

10/24/2011 1:21:45 PM

(Albany, NY) Mark Castiglione, Acting Executive Director of the Hudson River Valley Greenway, is pleased to announce the Town of Brunswick has received a $5,000 matching Greenway Communities Grant for the development of a comprehensive plan update. The Greenway Council made the grant award at a recent meeting.

The Town of Brunswick will develop a Comprehensive Plan update through an innovative participatory process that encourages public input on the Town's future growth and economic development decision-making. The Planning process will include the creation of community-wide goals and planning initiatives necessary to achieve smart growth, encourage new development, and protect past and current agricultural land uses. The Comprehensive Plan will result in a documented vision and planning guide to be used by the Town in addressing compatibility issues between various uses of land, preservation of open space, and adequate planning for economic development, housing, and infrastructure needs.

Mark Castiglione, Acting Executive Director of the Hudson River Valley Greenway, stated, “I’m pleased to be able help the citizens of Brunswick realize their vision. Whether it is protecting our cultural and environmental resources or charting a course for growth and development, a regularly updated comprehensive plan is central to finding the balance between those goals.”

“On behalf of the residents of the Town of Brunswick, I want to thank the Hudson Valley Greenway for their support, and look forward to partnering with them in the development of our Comprehensive Plan Update. Throughout the Hudson Valley, the Greenway has been a leader in sustainable growth and has assisted communities in balancing economic development, conservation, and land use. Over the next 10 months, we look forward to having an in-depth conversation with our residents as we chart a new course for the future of Brunswick,” said Supervisor Phil Herrington.

The Hudson River Valley Greenway works with communities on a voluntary basis to assist in the development of local land use plans and programs related to the Greenway criteria. Greenway community planning projects can be undertaken by a single community to address local issues or a group of communities working together to address both local and regional issues. Greenway Communities Grant Program provides grant funding to help communities develop and implement a vision for their future that balances Greenway criteria of economic development considerations with resource protection and promotion objectives.

The Hudson River Valley Greenway is a unique state-sponsored program established by the Greenway Act of 1991.  Presently, 269 out of the 324 eligible municipalities within the Greenway area have joined the Greenway.  The program is designed to encourage communities to develop projects and initiatives related to the criteria of natural and cultural resource protection, regional and local planning, economic development, public access to the Hudson River (as well as other regional and local resources), and heritage and environmental education.  It provides technical assistance and small grants for planning, water trail and land-based trails and other projects that reinforce the Greenway Criteria.  In keeping with the New York tradition of home rule, the Greenway program has no regulatory authority and participation of municipalities in Greenway programs and projects is entirely voluntary. The Greenway also manages the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
